Promenade Regeneration. Funded by Sea Change, the 700m linear site on the edge of Sandhaven beach has been transformed into an exciting new coastal route interspersed with public performance spaces.
Melanie was chosen as lead artist to work along side Scott Wilson’s Landscape Design teams in Middlesbrough & Edinburgh to design bespoke elements and artworks for the Foreshore.
Visitors are now welcomed by four large architectural sail features which mark each of the gateways to the promenade, each illuminated with integrated LEDs . Other art works include pre-cast concrete seating walls enhanced with unique patterns inspired by the area, depicting native dune grasses, marine birds and sea creatures. Sculptural incidental seats inspired by mussel shells, animate the board walk areas and encourage play.
Melanie also provided the concepts for the shelter walls, stripy deck chair like timbers and highly sculptural ‘Top Shell Shelters’ which may be built in the near future subject to funding.
