Old Hall Street, Liverpool
Integrated Art with Landscape, Old Hall Street, Liverpool. Melanie worked as part of an extensive design team, which included Stephen Broadbent, BCA Landscape Architects and Smiling Wolf multimedia designers. Melanie’s key roles were to contibute to the initial design concepts and to detail design the architectural artworks for manufacture, laising with third party manufactures and the Structural Engineer amongst others.
The artwork for this scheme makes reference to the site's location; being opposite the city’s port and being on the site of the old canal basin. The scheme included a public garden at the base of a new residential tower. Here an impressive Corten wall and pre-cast concrete walls, with illuminated glass ‘port holes’ featuring the 'faces of Liverpool' shelter the space. Stainless steel strips are set into the walls and floor, to connect the space, these lines being reminiscent of sea faring charts and maps. Six Corten steel and glass ‘Entrance Beacons’ for the new SAS Radison Hotel, also act as an inventive solution to vent the underground car park. Another precast, curved wall in front of the tower forms another sheltered area with 3D Morse Code embellishing the outside face, conveying a message to those arriving in the city.
