Holyhead
Artist and Artwork Consultant for Town Centre Improvements.
Ferguson McIlveen, now incorporated into URS, were commissioned to transform Holyhead town centre, including the strategic frontages facing the A55 and port. Melanie was appointed to act as a civic artwork consultant to assist with ideas for an artwork strategy, as well as provide design concepts for signage, interpretative art work, a unique car park boundary, bespoke railings and a landmark sculpture for the roundabout at the end of the regionally important A55.
Elements which were manufactured include this 9m long, low relief wall feature. The brief was to improve the view of the church’s entrance to encourage visitors to the church and also provide some interpretation. The original stone wall was lowered and capped with new railings designed to match the existing church railings. A plasma cut steel wall freeze, wraps around the wall and acts as an interpretative artwork for St.Cybi’s church, depicting one of the stories of the saint. An inlaid, etched plaque explains the abstract design and a brief history of the church.
